Laser

Regrowth

Low level laser therapy stimulates growth of existing hair. It is believed that the laser is absorbed by scalp cells to promote blood circulation. Not much is known about how lasers promote growth. There is still the same number of hair follicles so there is no regrowth. Many hair follicles will transition to the growth phase as a result of stimulation. There may be initial shedding during the transition as old hair is removed.

Dormant hair follicles will start to grow again for this reason it will appear as if new hair is growing. Your overall hair density will increase. The diameter of the hair shaft will increase which leads to thick looking hair. The hair will generally look better owing to hair follicles remaining on the growth phase for a longer period of time.

Ongoing treatment commitment

Hair needs to be cut to a length where a laser can reach the scalp for maximum results. The short hairstyle must be maintained throughout the treatment leaving you with limited hairstyles to choose from. However, a comb with a laser can be used but it's less effective and requires more effort as you brush. Laser comb doesn’t work on some types of hair, in particular afro-textured hair. The frequency and duration of the treatment varies from device to device. A single session of about 15 minutes per day is average.

Visible hair improvements will take 4 months to show until then you will have to wait. To keep the hair improvements, the treatment must be continued otherwise reversal will occur. You are locked into a treatment routine. In order to not miss treatment sessions, you may have to carry, charge and store the device safely each day so that it is available to use the next day.

Complications

There is a low risk of side effects from undergoing laser treatment.

Reversible

You don’t get any long term side effects from laser treatment therefore it is deemed reversible.

Cost

The cost of low level laser treatment varies considerably. Generally the more expensive treatments are more effective. You have the option of either going to a clinic or buying a device. Clinics will charge an ongoing cost whereas buying is a one time investment.

Going to a clinic for treatment costs about £20. Device costs between £150 to £1100.
